Bride of Loneliness

I dress in veil by a long time,

along the city's markets

in the evening;

and thin, like the frost,

sadness falls on me –

on my slender shoulders, still childish:

the call me the Bride of Loneliness.

On that day the sun was tired:

he had taken off his cap on the sea,

and slowly he let himself die

above the banks of a winter horizon.

The darkness came down quikly,

in the streets;

his shadow, smile of death,

cleared the path of my fate:

Bride of Loneliness.

Bride of Loneliness.

Forever.

I crossed traffic balls:

low, the gaze; steady, my step –

like the beating of my heart;

and I counted the springs of the world,

the ink of my pens,

the salt of my tears,

the stale sugar of my blood.

Bride of Loneliness,

Bride of Loneliness!

And the terror of mockery assailed me,

in front of an antique dealer

with dazzling windows.

A white dress, standing, stared at me;

in order, in that chaos of broken things:

whose that broken-heart? which flesh did wear it?

which pleasure did it hide so well?

I know it, now.

Bride of Awe,

I do not count anymore

the springs of the world;

nor the ink, nor the salt

nor the blood of myself.

I disappeared that night in the dress,

while a Waltz was mingled with the Mass.

Da tempo cammino vestita di velo

lungo i mercati della città, a sera;

e sottile mi cade la tristezza – come brina –

sulle spalle esili, ancora da bambina:

mi chiamano la Sposa della Solitudine.

Quel giorno il sole era stanco:

si era tolto il berretto sul mare,

e lentamente si lasciava morire

sopra gli argini di un orizzonte invernale.

Il buio scese in fretta, per le strade;

la sua ombra, sorriso di morte,

spianava il sentiero della mia sorte:

Sposa della Solitudine.

Sposa della Solitudine.

Per sempre.

Percorrevo gomitoli di traffico:

basso lo sguardo, il passo regolare;

come il battito del mio cuore;

e contavo le primavere del mondo,

l'inchiostro delle mie penne,

il sale delle mie lacrime,

lo zucchero raffermo del mio sangue.

Sposa della Solitudine,

Sposa della Solitudine!

E il terrore dello scherno mi assalì,

di fronte un antiquario

cólle vetrine abbacinanti.

Un abito bianco, in piedi, mi fissava;

ordinato, in quel caos di cose rotte:

di chi era quel cuore spezzato?

quali carni l'hanno indossato?

quale amplesso ha nascosto per bene?

Io lo so.

Sposa del Terrore:

del mondo non conto più le primavere;

né l'inchiostro

né il sale

né il sangue di me stessa.

Sparii, quella notte, nel vestito;

mentre un Valzer si confondeva con la Messa.
